The Oxford dictionary defines attitude as a “settled way of thinking or feeling about someone or some thing, typically one that is reflected in a person’s behavior.”
What I love about this definition is that it reinforces that our thoughts and feelings are reflected in our behavior.
In other words, what we choose to think about, and HOW we think, manifests itself in our behavior. Our behavior is the sum total of our actions.
That brings me to this little slogan which I love:
Attitude determines altitude.
How I think will determine how high I can go.
If I have a positive attitude, I’m going to eventually get positive results. That doesn’t mean that my day is going to go perfect. That doesn’t mean that I’m always going to achieve what I want.
But what it does mean is that if I am consistently looking for the positive in any situation, then I can take positive actions, which will lead to positive results.
Here is an acronym that I use to help me cultivate a positive mindset. That acronym is GREAT.
G– is for gratitude. I start by acknowledging that I am grateful to God for everything. No matter what the circumstances, I find what is good, and I give thanks for that. It’s surprising how much satisfaction you will get from looking for the answer to “what’s good in this situation?”
R– is for replace. Replace any negative thoughts that you have with positive ones. I know that I’m never going to be able to eliminate negative thoughts completely, but I have control over what I do with them once I have them. As the German monk, Martin Luther once said, “You cannot keep birds from flying over your head, but you can keep them from building a nest in your hair” If you have a negative thought, consciously push it out and replace it with a positive thought.
E– is for expectation. Positive self expectancy is a belief that if you expect good things to happen they will. It’s been described as the law of attraction. The more your mind dwells on positive outcomes, the more likely they are to happen. This is due in part to reinforcement at the subconscious level of your mind. Your subconscious mind works on autopilot to help you attain what you think about the most. Expect the best.
A– is for action. Thoughts give birth to actions. Actions are what make your thoughts a reality. If you don’t take any action, you won’t get any results. That’s why thinking, no matter how positive, is useless unless you take action on it. Put your thoughts to work, by taking action.
T– is for train. Train your mind daily. Developing positive thought patterns and a winning attitude is not a one-time thing. It is something that you must work on every day, diligently training your mind to develop a positive attitude.
Because of the cynicism in our human nature and its manifestations in our society, our mental default setting is negativity.
It’s easy to be negative about things.
It takes effort to push out negativity, and live your life in a manner that nurtures positive thought and action. You can do this. The more you do it the better you will get at it. Remember that your attitude will determine your altitude.
