Probiotics Primer: What They Are, What They Do, and Why They’re So Important

Probiotics are live bacteria and yeast found naturally in your body that are good for your health, especially your digestive system.

A healthy diet and lifestyle help produce good bacteria which helps promote good health. An unhealthy diet produces bad bacteria promoting poor health.

Healthy bacteria are in our gut to prevent unhealthy bacteria (pathogenic or disease-causing) from establishing a foothold in our digestive system.

Good bacteria also help complete the digestion process and produce short-chain fatty acids which are important for intestines and colon health.

One of the more exciting facts of probiotics is, gut bacteria send signals back to the brain and several other parts of the body which affects your health in numerous ways.

Studies have shown that some gut bacteria helps with glucose tolerance and decrease insulin resistance, which can aid in pre-diabetics.

Research also has shown that gut bacteria help with weight loss and inflammation. Plus, some studies are finding it can regulate testosterone levels.

Everyone can benefit from probiotics, by either eating yogurt or taking them as a supplement.

Though probiotics will help fortify the good gut bacteria in lean healthy people, those who are struggling with weight loss will benefit greatly by introducing the good bacteria to their bodies.
